12/29 Lesson 11 Vocabulary

1. Link the main theme 'packaging' back to the marketing strategy in Lesson 8. Raise Ss' attention about the ideas of packaging in different situations. (5 min)
2. Ask Ss to read the article without checking the meanings of the new words. Ask them to look for the two main ideas and do the reading comprehension check on p. 161. (5 min) While Ss are reading, write the important sentence patterns or phrases of the vocabulary on the board.
3. Teach the vocabulary by referring to the issues that just happened or are relative to the Ss , such as the tragedy of the tsunami, the garden party of the school anniversary, the dancing party of Jianchung, what their lockers contain and their collections. (30-40 min)

REFLECTION
Giving contexts that are related to Ss' school life when explaining the new words is effective and unexpectedly amusing. Although I don't know how much the Ss would absorb in the lecture, I do hope that their impression of the new words is strengthened becasue of the contexts. Then, it is easier for them to memorize the new words when they get home. I realize that without the help of PPT (techonology), with prepared open questions, I'm able to elicit many answers and create quite a large amount of teacher-student interaction. I also notice that the Ss are willing to make sentences as long as the structure is explained and the Chinese translation is given. Instead of 'reciting' the examples that I have prepared, next time I will let them practice more, making more sentences.

12/6 A Glimpse of the Story

1. Warm up
Impresseive PPT shows. Play the aria of this musical with a series of slide shows clipped from movies or the musical play. The music and the pictures attracted Ss attention and successifully arouse their interests.
2. Play a small clip from the musical play where Christine pulled off Phantom's mask and introduce the two characters to the Ss.

3. Go over the pronunciation of the vocabulary.
4. Play another clip from the movie (the beginning, where the old Raoul and Christine went back to the Opera House for the auction of the chandelier). Ask Ss to guess the characters.
5. Show the reading text with pictures and recitation of the story. Ask Ss to read and listen at the same time. New words were highlighted with a different color.
6. Ask Ss to do slient reading (3 min) and tell them she's going to ask some comprehension questions.
7. Show the questions on the PPT and pick up Ss to answer the questions by playing a small game [queen]. The game is played like this.
O
O Queen O
O
When Lichi draw lots, those who are sitting around the lucky person should stand up. The slowest student to stand up should answer the question. If the chosen person accidentally stand up, she should answer the question.
This is an interesting way to pick up the person to answer the questions. Because everytime a person is picked up, four Ss must stand up immediately, no one would fall asleep. Ss enjoyed this game a lot.
8. Expansion activity---listening comprehension exercise on p. 156.
9. Topics for discussion.
  • Do you feel sorry for the Phantom? Why or why not?
  • If you were Christine, what would you do to the Phantom at the end of the story? Would you kiss him?
  • Why did the Phantom finally let Christine and Raoul leave?

Ask Ss to form groups of four. Give them 3 minutes to discuss. After that, use the game[queen] to find "volunteers". This time, the form is different.

O queen O O O O O
